Malt and Grain Sugars

Maltose (malt sugar) and barley malt syrup come from the breakdown of starch in grains. Brown rice syrup is another grain-derived sweetener common in "natural" packaged foods.

Fruit and Plant-Based Sweeteners

Reading the Nutrition Facts Label

Since 2020, updated U.S. Nutrition Facts labels are required to list "Added Sugars" as a separate line beneath total sugars. This distinction matters because it separates sugars naturally present in food (like lactose in milk or fructose in whole fruit) from sugars added during processing or preparation.

Added Sugars vs. Total Sugars

"Total Sugars" on a Nutrition Facts label includes both naturally occurring sugars and added sugars combined. "Added Sugars" is the more informative figure when evaluating how much sugar a manufacturer has introduced during processing. For example, plain yogurt contains naturally occurring lactose, but flavored yogurt may have significant added sugars on top of that. Looking at both lines together gives you the fullest picture.

The ingredient list and the Nutrition Facts panel work together. The ingredient list tells you what sweeteners are present; the label tells you how much total and added sugar is in a serving. Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight - so if multiple sweeteners appear early and often, their combined contribution may be substantial even if no single one appears first.

Sugar alcohols - such as sorbitol, erythritol, xylitol, and maltitol - are a separate category. They provide fewer calories per gram than sugar and don't raise blood glucose as sharply, but they are still caloric and may cause digestive discomfort in some people at higher amounts. Non-nutritive sweeteners like stevia, monk fruit extract, sucralose, and aspartame provide little to no calories and are regulated as food additives or generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA.
